Why Guru Purnima is celebrated?

Guru Purnima is a tradition followed in India to honor spiritual and academic teachers. Primarily, Hindus, Buddhists and Jains celebrate this day. Since this day is celebrated on a full moon day (Purnima), the day came to be named as Guru Purnima.

Mahatma Gandhi later brought the tradition back of Guru Purnima to honor his guru Shrimad Rajchandra. On this day, in India everyone remembers their teachers for their contribution in uplifting their student’s lives.

How to celebrate Guru Purnima?

Guru Purnima is a special day to dedicate to your guru. It really depends on how you want to show your love and dedication to your teacher, by praying and helping others in time of need. In this COVID times, it is not possible to visit your guru, but you could speak to them over the internet or send them a gift to honor their service.

Vidhi for worshipping:

Traditionally, Guru Purnima Vidhi was followed by Hindus and Buddhists differently. Hindus conduct pujas to honor the great sage Vyasa (Guru Vyasa was born this day and wrote Brahma sutras). Buddhists conduct prayers for their guru Buddha. Classical dance and music students also consider this day as very auspicious. Students perform dances or musical recitals for their guru.

What is special about Guru Purnima 2021?

Guru Purnima is special as it reminds us of the hardships our gurus. They have gone through to teach us their knowledge and even a way of life. There have been many prominent gurus who have walked this Earth and each one of them have left a path for their followers to be on. Kabir, a renowned poet of the 15th Century once said, “Guru and God both appear before me. To whom should I prostrate? I bow before Guru who introduced me to God.”
